Shanghai, with numerous name tags attached to it, the 'Paris of the Orient' and the 'Pearl of China', is situated at 31.41' north latitude and 121.29' east longitude. With a pleasant northern subtropical maritime monsoon climate, Shanghai enjoys four distinct seasons, generous sunshine and abundant rainfall. The city covers an area of 6,340.5 square kilometres and extends about 120 kilometres in north to south and nearly 100 kilometres in east to west. Dotted with many rivers and lakes, the Shanghai area is known for its rich water resources. Originated from the Taihu Lake, the 113-kilometre-long Huangpu River winds through the downtown area of the city.
Shanghai is one of China's oldest industrial bases. The reform over the past 20 years has injected the city with new vitality. In 2001, the city's GDP exceeded 495 billion yuan (US$59.6 billion) with the per capita GDP reaching US$4,500. Steel, telecommunications,
automobiles, power production equipment, petrochemicals and electric appliances have become Shanghai's six pillar industries.
Besides, the city's service industry now represents a growing part of Shanghai's economy. Finance and insurance, commerce, real estate, tourism and information represent the key sectors for development. The city's goal is to become a regional economic and trade centre in China.
Shanghai is a modern and fast paced city, rich in history and culture with a wealth of areas and sites waiting to be explored. What makes Shanghai particularly attractive are the many different styles of architecture and design throughout the city. Shanghai was once pided up into different "International Concessions" or districts and the boundaries of these areas still remain today. But perhaps most of all today, Shanghai is a spectacularly modern city. Museums, galleries, restaurants and bars have emerged in the past few years. This cosmopolitan cultural scene which harks back to the heydays of the 1920s and 30s and the new found wealth in the city are helping to reinvent Shanghai as a place with a fabulous and optimistic style and attitude.
