In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic, extreme weather events and frequent environmental disasters have given renewed impetus to the drive to achieve sustainable development.
The increase came despite the Chinese government already taking action to accelerate the country’s sustainable development strategy to achieve low-carbon goals. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, China's carbon emission intensity dropped by 18.8%, well in excess of the agreed target. In 2020, the Chinese government formally proposed a "3060" goal, aiming to achieve peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. In 2021, the State Council issued the Carbon Peak Action Plan before 2030, clarifying its main goals during the 14th and 15th Five-year Plan periods, which is expected to further accelerate the country's process of carbon reduction.
The central role cities and real estate must play in achieving sustainability objectives has led CBRE to launch the Building Sustainability into Cities: A Commercial Real Estate Perspective.
